By 1967 many METEI articles had appeared in the popular press of North America and Europe, and its alumni were busy responding to multiple requests for public talks, a demand magnified by broadcast of the two films. Skoryna still had to wrestle with the unpaid bills, currying potential donors. The generous government backing, which he had been counting on for a future METEI-2, was discredited and collapsed. His “Preliminary Report” appeared within a month of METEI’s return, but it had merely summarized the work on Rapa Nui, describing the collections and emphasizing the need for analysis and interpretation. Scientific publications were needed to establish the credibility of METEI and reassure its supporters. A “final report” would rely on their results, which he estimated would take “at least six months.” Publications began to trickle in slowly over a decade, but the final report would never appear.
